PDF guide and pattern for making your own 40L ultralight backpack, and an additional complementary 25 page beginner sewing guide.

A 40L frameless backpack, following the design of modern ultralight packs: a large roll-top main compartment with multiple external, easy access, generously sized pockets. Optional removable webbing hipbelt. The main compartment is approximately 35L, with 5L of side pocket volume, and variable additional storage depending on pocket options.

*Although a frameless backpack guide, the instructions include an optional sleeve that allows you to insert a piece of curved tube, or a well shaped bit of plastic/foam, as a frame for a slight improvement in carrying comfort. There are no load lifters, padded hip belt or frame instructions, as these will be covered in the range of Prickly Gorse Framed Backpack sewing guides coming soon.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Some tricky seams and curves, and bulky areas. A practice run with scrap fabric is recommended.

Detailed instructions tailored to the complete beginner, although experienced sewers will have lots of learn also. No confusing abbreviations, all written in plain verbose English.

UNTESTED rough draft of a Jones Bar bag pattern. Dimensions are eyeballed from the diagram at WhatBar and assuming 710mm wide bars.

Please let me know if it needs adjusting!

I’ve assumed you want a 1″ webbing ladder around the bag but you can use the labelled points to put webbing or velcro wherever you want. Also assumed you want it 4″ deep but you can just make the gusset shorter.

A custom bag designed for a specific bike pannier rack. It is meant to be bolted to the rack but I’ve included a simple suggestion for how you could attach it with straps instead.

Not sure how much use this design will be for other people, but seems a waste not to share it just in-case.

The bag has a stiffened base and stiffened side panels, with loops for additional webbing straps and/or bike lights
